How can we facilitate inclusive virtual experiences?

About this event

Adopting an inclusive approach to our online events encourages us to identify the barriers to full participation caused by the digital divide, the psychosocial context of these meetings during the pandemic and, more generally, by the diversity of languages, abilities and disabilities. Far from stopping at barriers, however, an inclusive approach invites us to draw inspiration from the creativity of virtual experiences built by communities too often pushed to the margins.

1. Digital divide and accessibility: understanding the barriers

  • Digital literacy
  • Psychosocial aspects and neurodiversity
  • Disability and ability situations
  • Interpretation and multilingual exchanges

2. Best practices, challenges and questions

3. Moving toward solidarity-based accessibility: blind spots and commitments

A facilitator of assemblies, open forums and popular education processes, Maude Chalvin became familiar with facilitating virtual workshops and meetings in 2008 while collaborating with Peace Brigades International (PBI), an organization where decisions are made by consensus among members spread across different countries. Since then, she has developed tips to facilitate this type of remote exercise by combining technology, collaborative creativity and a participatory approach. A community organizer for 15 years, she now works as a consultant and facilitator while continuing studies aimed at developing mediation services for organizations.

The series “Together despite the screen: demystifying virtual mode for collective action” offers four targeted workshops to help practitioners and facilitators adapt their collective facilitation practices to virtual mode. See the other workshops in the series here.
