Part 1: Montréal’s anti-predation model — how collaboration fostered the development of the world’s strongest AI research community
This article is the first in a series offering an insider’s view of every aspect of the AI ecosystem in Canada, especially in Montréal and Toronto — two of Canada’s most active AI cities.
AI is undoubtedly booming in Canada. But what allows major Canadian cities to host such exceptional research centres and startup scenes?
By looking into the history of the main AI stakeholders, teaching institutions and research centres in Montréal, and by also analyzing their relationships and influence on local entrepreneurs and community growth, we identified three historical periods, each of which had a positive impact on the network of startups and other AI companies:
- The roots of research and a collaborative model
- An AI research network that attracted attention and talent from around the world
- Local and international support
