Guillaume Marmin, a Sculptor of Light Between Order and Chaos

For the Chromatic Festival, held from May 19 to 22, we spoke with the inspired video artist Guillaume Marmin, who is presenting immersive films at the crossroads of experimental video and kinetic art. What is

your background? In about

ten years, I moved from conventional audiovisual directing to designing immersive devices for shows and installations. Today I am interested in the relationships between light, sound and space. What are your

first impressions of Montréal? Is it your first time in

Québec? Yes, I had wanted to come for a long time. I admit the thermometer is not joking, but luckily I have discovered a passion

for the guédille. What is your relationship with cinema and images in general? For several years you have mixed different media: photography, video, 3D sculptures, mapping and

more. What is your guiding thread? Whether scratching film stock or materializing light with smoke, I have always looked for another way to make cinema. It involves experimenting with new media and projection methods, and building a strong connection with music in order to find new ways of telling stories. I like cinema when the actors fall silent, when the music begins and when the sense of time

becomes blurred. Can you tell us more about the key ideas that often emerge from your work: experimentation, mysticism,

transcendence and abstraction? When you are interested in light, you are at the convergence of science, religion and philosophical questions. Without being a specialist, I like playing with those discourses and

their poetic reach. How did you come to present your  

work at Chromatic? I sent emails to MASSIVart and Tetro, who had the good idea of producing a

project together. In your view, what distinguishes Montréal in terms

of digital creativity? There is clearly a major scene in Montréal, with benchmark artists such as Herman Kolgen and many young artists on the rise. Québecers are also very well structured for international distribution. It is crazy, they are

everywhere! What are your favourite discoveries in creativity? What excites you most? I like it

when technique disappears in favour of a singular and radical statement. What are

your future projects? To become

immortal and then die. A
