Independent Games: Being the Winner
The independent video-game sector is gaining ground
in Québec, andaround a hundred studios now shine across the province. During the Start up Numix day, creators, studios and industry partners
gathered to discuss the strengths and challenges of this fast-growing ecosystem. Independent games are often driven by small teams,
strong
artistic direction and the desire to take risks that larger
productions cannot always afford. These projects can be playful, narrative, experimental or socially
engaged, and they help renew the language of video
games. For entrepreneurs, being a winner does
not
only mean receiving a prize; it means finding an audience, building a sustainable
team,
learning how to present a project and developing a business model
that respects creative ambition. The event highlighted the importance of mentorship, financing, networking and visibility for studios that want to
move from prototype to market. It also showed
that Montréal and Québec have a fertile environment for independent
games thanks
to talent, training programs, festivals
and a culture of collaboration. The day offered a chance to share experience, discover projects and build bridges between creators
and
business partners. The message was clear: independent video
games are not a niche curiosity, but a dynamic component
of digital creativity and
economic development.
